Abstract Think-aloud protocols and eye-tracking studies have been shown to be valuable tools to evaluate different systems, such as websites, software, or games. Some first studies also suggest the combination of eye-tracking and think-aloud protocols to gain deeper insights in usability and design issues. The outcomes of this combined evaluation approach are often used to give feedback to design strategies. However, this combined evaluation approach is scarcely integrated in the design process. In this paper we explain how eye-tracking combined with think-aloud protocols can be used to redesign user interactions with an existing system with the goal to integrate game design elements and gamification strategies. This approach can be used already in early application stages to design and such systems before the integration of the main game design elements. In a first experiment, we use the outcomes of the combined evaluation approach to make first design decisions for gamification strategies. First findings indicate that a combination of think-aloud protocols with eye-tracking can give insights in the design of proper tasks goals and a fitting feedback design.

Word-Sized Eye Tracking Visualizations
In user studies, eye tracking is often used in combination with other recordings, such as think-aloud protocols. However, it is difficult to analyze the eye tracking data and transcribed recordings together because of missing data alignment and integration. We suggest the use of word-sized eye tracking visualizations to augment the transcript with important events that occurred concurrently to ...

The present study aims to investigate language learners’ cognitive processes in on-line ESP courses. Three modes of inquiry are used: think-aloud protocol analysis, screen capture analysis, and correlation analysis. The theoretical foundations for the evaluation of the cognitive aspect of Ferdowsi Univeristy of Mashhad E-learning System are drawn from cognitive load theory, cognitive apprentice...
متن کاملStudying computer game learning experience through eye tracking
The use of computer games has been a popular but controversial issue. Dickey (2005) points out that instructional technologists are prepared to borrow techniques from various fields of media such as film, television and comics. Computer games, however, are ignored in terms of advancing new methods for instructional models despite a body of research on computer games and the availability of edut...

g in usability research onal usability testing. There are various methodologies available when conducting research using eye trackers. This paper presents the results of a study aimed to compare the outcomes from four different retrospective think aloud (RTA) methods in a web usability study: an un‐cued RTA, a video cued RTA, a gaze plot cued RTA, and a gaze video cued RTA. Results indicate tha...
متن کاملTracking Eyes in Service Prototyping
A mobile eye tracker was used to collect viewing behavior in a mixed reality immersive Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) environment to evaluate a design concept of a tourist information office. The synthetic office consists of physical artifacts and virtual contents projected onto three walls of a room-sized cube. A Think Aloud study was conducted with both a goal-oriented condition an...
